Your Hindi conversations stay on your computer

Write to Pivra Desk in Hindi, Hinglish or English; with a model on your computer, your chat stays on it. What works today, what's coming, what's improving.

आपकी बातचीत आपके कंप्यूटर पर ही रहती है। Your Hindi conversations stay on your computer.

Many people think in one language, write in another and switch halfway through a sentence. "Kal ki meeting ka summary bana do" is a perfectly normal request. An AI assistant should take it as it comes, and it should not need to send it abroad to do so.

The short answer: you can write to Pivra Desk in Hindi, in Hinglish or in English, and when you use a model on your computer, the conversation stays on it; if the agent searches the web, only the search words go to DuckDuckGo. Coming in the next update: Hindi and Hinglish requests get the same tools as English ones, and your agent's search of your chats and memory gets more reliable in Hindi; how well each model writes Hindi is something we will measure before we claim anything.

This is the last post in our series for India. The first post explains why we believe AI belongs on your own computer, and Local-first AI for India covers privacy, identifiers and rupee sums.

Why "stays on your computer" matters more in Hindi#

The things people say in their own language are often the most personal: a message to family about a property matter, notes from a doctor's visit, a quarrel with a business partner they are still deciding how to handle. People are often more candid in the language they think in.

That is exactly the kind of text that should not travel by default. With Pivra Desk:

  • Your agents, chats, memory and rules live in a local database on your computer, in whatever language you wrote them; your files stay where they are.
  • With a model on your computer, your conversation stays on the machine. Not to Pivra, not to a model provider. If the agent searches the web, only the search words go to DuckDuckGo.
  • With a cloud model you chose, your request goes from your computer to that provider under your own account. That is your choice, made in Settings → Model, and you can switch back at any time.

We never train on your data, in any language. Privacy, and where your data lives has the full list of what can leave and when.

What works today#

Today you can:

  • Write in Hindi (Devanagari), in Hinglish (Hindi in Latin letters), or mix both with English. Pivra Desk takes the message as you typed it.
  • Keep your conversations on your machine by choosing a model that runs on your computer during setup or in Settings → Model.
  • Use a cloud model when you want one, and, if you like, turn on Hide identifiers under Settings → Privacy so Aadhaar, PAN, phone numbers and similar identifiers are replaced with labels before anything reaches it. It hides identifiers; it does not make a chat anonymous.
  • Rely on the same approvals. Whatever language you write in, anything that sends, publishes, pays or changes something waits for your yes on an approval card.

What is not right yet: today, some Hindi and Hinglish requests are treated as plain conversation when they should use a tool, such as reading a file or searching. The app's menus and buttons are in English for now.

Coming in the next update#

These are built and in testing, and they are coming in the next update:

  • Hindi and Hinglish requests get the same tools as English. "इस फ़ोल्डर की सारी invoices पढ़ो" can read the files, not just chat about them.
  • Hindi that your agent can find again. When your agent searches your chats and memory, Hindi words keep their vowel signs and other marks, so it finds the words you actually typed.
  • "Done" means checked, in Hindi too. When Pivra Desk can't check a step, it says so instead of calling the job done, and the checks that catch an unproven claim will also read Hindi and Hinglish.
  • Exact sums in ₹, lakh and crore. A question that's just a sum, including Hinglish like "2340 ka 15% kitna hai", is worked out exactly, in code, on your computer, with no model involved.
  • Stop stops straight away, even if a tool is already running, and if a step may already have happened, such as an email, it tells you to check.

How to use Hindi and Hinglish well#

A few tips:

  1. Write the way you speak. You don't have to switch to formal Hindi or to English. "Is email ka jawab polite tone mein likho" is fine.
  2. Name the file or folder. "Is folder mein jo GST invoice hai, uska summary do" gives the agent something definite to work with.
  3. Ask for the reply language you want. If you write in Hinglish but want the draft in English for a client, say so: "Reply English mein likho."
  4. Check names and numbers in the draft. As with any AI writing, read before you approve. The approval card shows exactly what will be sent.
  5. Try a cloud model for long Hindi drafts if the model on your computer struggles, and switch on Hide identifiers if the text has ID numbers in it.

What's still improving#

We want to be plain about this.

We have not published measurements of how well the models write Hindi. Smaller models that run on a laptop are often less fluent in Hindi than in English, and quality varies from model to model. Measuring Hindi and other Indian languages on the models Pivra Desk offers is on our list, and we will publish what we find before we make any claim about quality.

Other things on our list:

  • Menus and buttons in Hindi. The app is in English today.
  • More Indian languages. We are starting with Hindi and will measure others before saying they work.
  • Search that is forgiving about spelling, for example the nukta (फ़ाइल and फाइल). More reliable Hindi search in your chats and memory is coming in the next update; forgiving spelling is a follow-up.

If something works badly in Hindi on your computer, tell us what you typed and which model you used. That is the most useful report we can get.

Frequently asked questions#

What is Pivra Desk?#

Pivra Desk is a local-first personal AI agent for Mac and Windows. It works across your files, browser and apps using a model on your computer or a cloud model you choose, and asks before consequential actions.

Can I use Pivra Desk in Hindi?#

Yes. You can write in Hindi, Hinglish or English. The app's menus are in English for now. How well the replies read depends on the model you choose.

Do my Hindi chats leave my computer?#

Not with a model on your computer: your chats and memory stay in a local database on your machine, and your files stay where they are. If the agent searches the web, only the search words go to DuckDuckGo. If you choose a cloud model, your requests go to that provider under your account.

Does it understand Hinglish?#

You can write in Hinglish today. Coming in the next update: Hinglish requests get the same tools as English ones, and a question that's just a sum, like "2340 ka 15%", is computed exactly on your computer.

Is the Hindi as good as English?#

We don't claim it is. Smaller local models are often stronger in English. We will measure Hindi on the models we offer and publish the results before saying more.

Which computers does it run on?#

Macs with Apple silicon and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. See the install guide.

How much does it cost?#

There is a free plan. The paid plans, Plus and Plus + Credits, are not on sale yet: join the waitlist. See pricing.

Try it in your own words#

Download Pivra Desk, choose a model that runs on your computer, and ask for something in the language you think in. Your conversation stays with you.
